About
Jennette McCurdy Memoir Allegations Against Dan Schneider refers to claims made by ex-iCarly actress and Nickelodeon child star Jennette McCurdy in her 2022 book I'm Glad My Mom Died where she stated that "the Creator," purportedly Dan Schneider, photographed her in a bikini and encouraged her to drink alcohol at a young age, as well as offered her $300,000 to stay quiet about her experiences. The allegations followed years of tension between McCurdy and Schneider that painted him as an alleged sexual predator against minors, indicative in his supposed obsession with feet, as well as McCurdy's refusal to join the cast of the 2021 iCarly reboot. The claims led to media coverage, reactions and memes across social media in August 2022, predominantly on Twitter.
Origin
On August 3rd, 2022, the New York Times[1] published an article titled, "Jennette McCurdy Is Ready to Move Forward, and to Look Back," wherein, they discussed McCurdy's upcoming memoir I'm Glad My Mom Died. In a section of the article, it stated that "McCurdy endured various embarrassments and indignities at Nickelodeon," such as "being photographed in a bikini at a wardrobe fitting and being encouraged to drink alcohol," by someone she called "the Creator." The article went on to blame McCurdy's mother, Debra, for not intervening in the situation and many others, reportedly instructing McCurdy that "this was the price of showbiz success." Also in the article, the NYT surfaced information that McCurdy had allegedly been offered $300,000 to stay quiet about her experiences at Nickelodeon.
On the day following the NYT article's publication, Twitter[2] page PopBase tweeted the quote from the article about the $300,000 offer, earning roughly 236,500 likes in one day (shown below, left). PopBase also posted a tweet[3] about the controversial "bikini" setting on August 4th, earning roughly 12,700 likes in the same amount of time (shown below, right).
Online Reaction
After PopBase brought the NYT quotes to the attention of Twitter, other internet news outlets posted related tweets that earned similar viral engagement. For instance, on August 4th, 2022, the Twitter[4] account ObiscureNick tweeted about the controversial "bikini" setting, earning roughly 68,500 likes in less than a day.
These aforementioned tweets inspired a viral discussion and debate online that continued into August 2022. For instance, on August 5th, Twitter[5] user Maru1690 replied to ObiscureNick's tweet, claiming that there were supposed to be worse allegations about "the Creator" but McCurdy's attorneys and publisher warned her that she could have "legal issues." The reply received over 6,000 likes in less than a day (shown below, left). However, the claims that Maru1690 made in the reply are currently unfounded.
Twitter[6] user Aidan64NES then replied to Maru1690, claiming, "Well, considering that Simon & Schuster are publishing the book and is a subsidiary of Paramount, the owners of Nickelodeon, it doesn’t surprise me about them wanting to be safe," earning over 3,100 likes in less than a day (shown below, right).
Also on August 5th, 2022, Twitter[7] user ConditorCancri posted a quote retweet that claimed Nickelodeon knew that Schnieder was an alleged "pedophile who abused children" and "protected him for years because he made them money." In less than a day, the QT received roughly 35,200 likes (shown below, left). Also on August 5th, Twitter[8] user JeromeM94Movies tweeted an image that read, "Nickelodeon Creep Club," picturing executives from the children's network and their alleged aggressions against minors.
