JO Crystal or Jack Off Crystal refers to a viral Craigslist post screenshot seeking out a man to masturbate with while wearing crystals in order to "recharge" the poster's "JO crystal," which he claims gives him confidence at work, home and in social situations when properly charged. The screenshot was posted to Reddit's /r/wtf sub in 2012 and garnered viral spread over the following years, becoming the subject of redraws and referential memes.

Origin

On February 3rd, 2012, Redditor u/SolInvictus posted a screenshot of a Craigslist post to the subreddit /r/WTF,^[1] garnering over 1,300 upvotes in 12 years. The post consists of side-by-side photos of a crystal on a necklace and a shirtless man. The post, titled, "charge up and JO – 38 (Houston)," reads:

The crystal I wear around my neck contains an essence that gets recharged when I jack it with a bro who also has a crystal. It gives me confidence at work, home, social situations, etc. Nobody knows it's a JO crystal but me and my bros. I have seen it glow white while jerking it with a bud thats how I know this is real. You can come over for as long as you want but I need a picture of you preferably wearing a crystal before I waste my time.

Spread

The post garnered viral spread over the following years, inspiring memes. On May 11th, 2015, Redditor u/johnnysurfacepickles posted a redraw of the screenshot to /r/StardustCrusaders,^[2] garnering around 65 upvotes and acting as the earliest known redraw of the meme. On February 25th, 2022, X^[3] user @inkopolis posted a redraw based on the game NU: Carnival, garnering over 2,900 likes in two years.

On April 8th, 2023, X^[4] user @SenzVtuber posted a photograph of their crystal, which resembles the crystal in the JO crystal meme, writing, "I just learned what a JO crystal is, I’m ripping this thing off and flushing it down the toilet," garnering over 1,700 upvotes in a year.
