About
Joe Biden Ball Gag Theory is a conspiracy theory that U.S. President Joe Biden was wearing a fetish "ball gag" device that left marks and indents on his face in mid-2023. The theory was sparked by viral photographs of President Biden with marks visible on his cheeks. Although the marks were later likened to being caused by a sleep apnea machine and breathing mask, users on Twitter and elsewhere spread the viral three-panel comparison between President Biden's face and a product image of a ball gag.
Origin
On June 28th, 2023, President Joe Biden was photographed by Getty Images[1] photographer Chip Somodevilla talking to reporters as he departed the White House. The photos were quickly tweeted by Twitter[2] user @KateHydeNY that same day, who wrote, "What the heck did Biden have strapped on his face that made these marks this morning? Does he use a nebulizer?" gaining roughly 20,700 likes in one week (shown below).
At around 12:21 p.m. EST on June 28th, Twitter[3] user @NorvR then replied to @KateHydeNY with a GIF of Markiplier winking with a ball gag in his mouth, gaining over 280 likes in one week (shown below, left). A few minutes later, at around 12:30 p.m., Twitter[4] user @HollyBriden replied to @KateHydeNY with a product image of a ball gag, captioned, "'Nebulizer,'" gaining roughly 6,600 likes in one week (shown below, right).
Spread
In the week following Twitter[2] user @KateHydeNY's tweet and its replies, the "ball gag" comparison and theory continued to trend via different viral tweets. For instance, later on June 28th, 2023, Twitter[5] user @JoeyMannarinoUS tweeted, "What is going on in the White House? Did Michelle Obama pay a visit?" as the caption for red-circled images of President Biden with an additional image of a ball gag. The tweet received roughly 51,500 likes in one week (shown below).
On July 3rd, 2023, Twitter[6] user @OrcpilledGnomer tweeted a three-panel image showing the comparison, gaining roughly 45,800 likes in two days (shown below, left). The image quickly spread elsewhere, such as 4chan's /pol/[7][8] board on July 4th (shown below, right).
Viral reposts of the image also surfaced on Instagram[9] in July 2023.
