Joker Raped in Folie à Deux refers to a scene that heavily implies the character Arthur Fleck / Joker is sexually assaulted by prison guards in the 2024 film Joker: Folie à Deux. The scene became a subject of controversy online as many users expressed dissatisfaction with it and the film as a whole, and it was a prevalent subject of memes on X / Twitter and 4chan's /tv/ board in early October 2024.
Origin
On October 4th, 2024, the musical psychological thriller film Joker: Folie à Deux, a sequel to the critically acclaimed and commercially successful 2019 film Joker, premiered. One scene of the film heavily implies that the main character Arthur Fleck / Joker, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is sexually assaulted by prison guards at Arkham. On the following day, Arthur renounces his Joker persona during a closing argument in court.[1]
On social media, the scene became a subject of viral discussions and memes as critics and users expressed their disappointment with the writing of the film and the direction it took.[2][3]
On October 3rd, 2024, an anonymous 4chan user made one earliest found posts about the scene on the /tv/[4] board, a What Did He Mean By This? post (shown below). Also on October 3rd, X[5] user @hotepchungus posted a screenshot of the post, which received over 9.8 million views, 2,400 reposts and 87,000 likes in four days.

More posts and memes about the scene were shared by users on X and 4chan in early October 2024. For example, on October 4th, X[7] user @hayasaka_aryan posted a video caption meme based on a The Angry Video Game Nerd clip that received over 450 reposts and 4,600 likes in three days (shown below).

On October 5th, 2024, an anonymous 4chan user started a /tv/[8] thread in which users rewrote famous Joker quotes to reference the scene, which accumulated over 330 replies in two days (shown below).
