About

"Just Announced: Zero Seats" / "Just Announced" is a meme originating on Twitter used to make fun of someone or something, usually a politician. It is currently popular in Australian political contexts, however it sees widespread global usage and limited non-political usage.

Origin

The meme has its origins in UK political discussions where it was originally used to mock the Conservative party and insinuate they would get zero seats at the upcoming general election. In early February of 2023, the Conservative party posted[1] an announcement on Twitter of the party's new Deputy Chairman.

In mid 2024, parodies of the announcement image reading "CONSERVATIVES JUST ANNOUNCED: ZERO SEATS" with Rishi Sunak's face on them began circulating on Twitter.

Spread

People on Twitter quickly started editing the meme, changing the political party mentioned and the politician featured on the meme depending on their local area[2], and the phrase "just announced: zero seats" was in many instances used as a funny quip by people who thought or hoped that a politician or party would not succeed, even if they didn't modify the image.

In early 2025, the meme spread rapidly within Australia when Australian news outlet 6 News started using the meme format, and by the time of the federal election in May it had seen significant usage and posts by 6 News using the meme saw significantly more engagement than usual[3].
