About

"Justice Rains From Above" is a memorable quote uttered by the the playable hero character Pharah whenever she uses her ultimate ability Barrage in the first-person shooter video game Overwatch.

Origin

As one of the 22 playable hero characters in Overwatch, Pharah has an ultimate ability allowing her to shoot a volley of rockets that deals massive damage to enemies in their path. When executing the attack, all players hear Pharah loudly announce "Justice rains from above!" in the game (shown below).



Spread

On October 2nd, 2015, YouTuber Jexoun uploaded a video titled "Justice Rains From Above," featuring a montage of Pharah executing the ability and being promptly killed while uttering the phrase (shown below, left). The same day, Jexoun posted his video on the /r/overwearch subreddit.[1] On May 5th, the Overwatch open beta was launched. Two days later, Tumblr user totokii posted a GIF of a costumed character running from a series of explosions with the caption "justice rains from above," gaining over 5,100 notes in the following week.[4]

The next day, Tumblr user themysteriousmurasamecastle posted an animated GIF of a rocket exploding in the cartoon Dr. Rabbit along with the Pharah quote. Within one week, the post received more than 5,000 notes. On May 9th, Twitter user KoalaTactics posted a version of the Laughing Tom Cruise image featuring the Overwatch character Widowmaker along with the caption "MFW "Justice rains from-- AUUGH!"", accumulating upwards of 1,700 retweets and 2,500 likes in the following week.[5]
