Knigga refers to an image macro series containing portmanteaus that combine the names of various black-colored objects with word "nigga". The template rose to popularity in March 2019, often used together with Me, an Intellectual meme.
Origin
The exact origin of the meme is unknown. On March 19th, 2019, iFunny user Celebruty uploaded the earliest known version of the meme based on an image of black lion, captioned "Ligga", a portmanteau of the words "lion" and "nigga". The post gained over 79,400 likes on the platform within one month.[1]
Spread
In the following days, the format received significant spread on Reddit, Instagram, iFunny and other platforms. For example, on March 20th, 2019, Redditor RealNachoGod posted a version of the meme which gained over 16,800 upvotes in one day.[2]
Among variations of the meme, examples featuring images of black knights captioned "knigga" received the most prominent spread (examples shown below).[3][4][5]
In the following month, the format saw moderate spread online, with notable examples appearing on Reddit[6] and Instagram.[7]
