Lesbians Doing Makeup is an exploitable image macro depicting a photo of two women on a bed, one of them on top applying eyeliner to the other who lies underneath her on a bed. The image is often noted for the sexual tension it conveys and is frequently used either as an object-labeling meme or redrawn to feature different characters in each position mimicking the original.

Origin

The image originates from a post by Instagram influencer and model @vivadrag, featuring herself (the girl on top) and another Instagrammer, @clarekatharsis. The post received over 27,000 likes in four years and is filled with comments from other users saying, as @charinchains did in 2021, "YES I FOUND THE ORIGINAL."^[1] @vivadrag, whose given name is Ashley Renee, is a model who started by "posting crazy looks just to grab people's attention and then kinda just blew up on the internet," according to a video interview from Hot Topic.^[2]

Spread

After @vivadrag's original post, the photo circulated widely on its own, gaining enough notoriety that several threads online exist of people asking about its origin or a link to the photo. One of these, asked by Twitter user @s1ck1y and answered by @ondini_isable on March 15th, 2020, received over 130 likes in the course of two years.^[3]

Another request on December 21st, 2021, from Reddit's /r/lesbianmemes, received over 160 likes in the course of seven months.^[4]

The meme is used in many fandoms and fanfiction circles, with posters redrawing the image to feature preferred characters. A July 28th, 2021 Instagram post by @dalorca redrew the characters and received over 8,100 likes in less than a year.^[5]

The image was also re-enacted by real-life people, notably by on the subreddit /r/lgbt by u/sora_409 on November 12th, 2020, in which one of the girls in the re-enacted photo was transgender.^[6] The post received almost 6,000 upvotes over the course of a year and a half.
