About

Listen You Crustaceous Cheapskate refers to a series of remixes of a scene from SpongeBob SquarePants in which Spongebob accosts Mr. Krabs and shouts "Listen you crustaceous cheapskate! Squidward's been living in my house driving me crazy! And you're not gonna hire him back all because of a stupid dime?!?" In the remixes, SpongeBob's line is remixed to fit various music and, occasionally, animations.

Origin

The original scene comes from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Can You Spare A Dime?", which aired on March 8th, 2002.[1] In the episode, Mr. Krabs accuses Squidward of stealing his first dime, and Squidward quits. Squidward quickly becomes homeless, and SpongeBob takes him in out of kindness. After Squidward abuses SpongeBob's kindness, SpongeBob demands Mr. Krabs give him his job back, leading to the confrontation.

The earliest known remix of the scene was posted by Tumblr user TeaThatTast,[2] setting SpongeBob's line to the Vengaboys song "We Like To Party," gaining over 240,000 notes (YouTube embed shown below).

Spread

The scene spread as a meme thanks in large part to DitzyFlama, who took to creating increasingly elaborate remixes of the scene on his Twitter account in late 2020 and early 2021. On October 19th, 2020, he uploaded an example that included music from Yoshi's Island, gaining over 5,400 retweets and 20,000 likes (shown below, top). On January 17th, 2021, he uploaded a remix using "The Death Of Glamour" from Undertale to YouTube, where it gained over 2.4 million views (shown below, bottom).

Others made variations of the meme on YouTube. On March 23rd, 2021, user Shovel Show posted an animated version of DitzyFlama's "Death By Krab Borg" video, gaining over 790,000 views (shown below, left). On May 10th, 2021, user The Easily Amused Bastad posted an ear rape version of the meme, gaining over 35,000 views (shown below, right).
