About
MAP / NOMAP are slang terms and acronyms that stand for Minor-Attracted Persons and Non-Offending Minor Attracted Persons. The term is an informal euphemism for the word "pedophile." The acronym first gained notable use on the micro-blogging site Tumblr. Tumblr blogs that were known for discussing MAPs before 2016 were often geared towards warning younger users against interacting with more marginal MAP accounts. Public knowledge and discussions about MAPs then began to grow on other social networking sites after 2017, with the term being used by various conservative activists in 2022.
Origin
Discussions about MAPs being pedophiles can be traced back to Tumblr communities before the year 2016. Several pro-MAP, anti-MAP and "reformed" MAP blogs created posts listing accounts in and against their respective groups. A December 2016 post[1] made by Tumblr user antimap-steeljaw documents various posts made by pro-MAP accounts in late 2016 (seen below).
In 2016, an account named anastypileofwhores posted a tweet criticizing MAPs and their attempted inclusion into LGBTQ culture, gathering over 3.37 notes in over five years (seen below, left).[2] Also in 2016, an account named combat baby posted a tweet criticizing NOMAP's characterization of "non-offending" attraction, gathering over 20,000 notes in five years (seen below, right).[3]
Around this time, various Tumblr pages were dedicated to documenting Tumblr MAPs and discouraging young users from interacting with them.[4][5]
