Mariah Carey "You Don't Wanna Hear About 9/11" refers to a botched transition uttered by American singer Mariah Carey at a 2022 concert in New York City in which she randomly brought up the September 11th, 2001, Attacks. The incident happened at the Global Citizen Festival in September 2022 and inspired viral usage on TikTok as a sound in which creators referenced other topics people "didn't want to hear about," mostly related to their anxiety, OCD or trauma.

Origin

On September 25th, 2022, the Global Citizen Festival took place in Central Park, Manhattan.[1] On the same day, TikToker[2] jake.kaplan posted a video from the event, showing Mariah Carey on stage. The video had text overlay reading, "Mariah Carey randomly bringing up the 9/11 attacks during a concert," and over the course of two months, the video received roughly 12.6 million plays and 1.6 million likes (shown below, left). Soon after on September 25th, 2022, TikToker[3] keropikki used the sound in a video that referenced the Turning Red 9/11 debate and gained roughly 291,800 plays and 81,400 likes in two months (shown below, right).

Continuing into October and November 2022, the TikTok video and its sound[4] received more usage, becoming increasingly viral as time went on. For instance, on October 12th, 2022, TikToker[5] vmin3sum used the sound to talk about her dad's death by skydiving, gaining roughly 1.5 million plays and 307,200 likes in one month (shown below, left). On October 20th, 2022, TikToker[6] abbbbsssss used the sound for a video taken on September 11th, 2001, showing a Mariah Carey subway advertisement in the foreground of the attacks, gaining roughly 1.7 million plays and 297,900 likes in one month (shown below, right).
