About
Marquise Goodwin in the Snow, also known by the prevalent caption It's Suicide Sunday, refers to a photograph of American football player Marquise Goodwin shirtless with his arms outstretched to the sides and snow up to his knees. First gaining virality in 2019 as a part of a viral White Girl Wednesday image macro, the photo has since been paired with a variety of It's X [Weekday] captions.
Origin
On November 18th, 2014, American football player Marquise Goodwin posted a photograph of himself standing in the snow, half-naked, on his knees and raising his arms as in an embrace, to his Instagram[1] account (shown below). The post has since been deleted.
On November 19th, the photograph appeared in several news articles and social media posts about a major snowfall in Buffalo, including a Facebook[2] post by WPXI-TV Pittsburg and a news report by Outsports.[3]
Sometime prior to April 19th, 2019, an unknown user captioned the image, "When it's white girl Wednesday" (shown below). On that day, Amino[4] user Star made the earliest found repost of the image as a part of a meme dump.
Spread
The image saw widespread circulation online in 2019 and 2020: for example, on May 15th, 2019, Redditor BasicallyHard posted it to the /r/teenagers[5] subreddit, where it received 16 upvotes in five years.
Prior to July 6th, 2022, an unknown user posted the earliest found of the macro recaptioned, "When it's sexual Friday." On July 6th, 2023, iFunny[6] user morningwoodgaming12_2022 made the earliest found repost of the image. On August 27th, 2022, Redditor Kodiak601 reposted the image to the /r/okbuddyretard[7] subreddit where it received over 180 upvotes in one year (shown below).
On August 13th, 2023, iFunny[8] user lithy posted a video caption meme based on the image, recaptioning it, "When it's Suicide Sunday," and setting it to the song "Surrender" by the synthpop band Suicide, with the meme therefore being used similarly to Out of Touch Thursday. The post (shown below) received over 150 smiles in five months.
In the following months, the post with the song removed has been used out of context. For example, on October 22nd, 2023, the Tumblr[9] account bruno-has-definitely-deactivate reposted the image, with the post gaining over 1,800 likes and reblogs in two months (shown below, left).
Starting on December 12th, 2023, X user @femceldorito posted daily recaptioned versions of the It's Suicide Sunday macro. The first post in the series, captioned, "When It's Suicide Tuesday," garnered over 5,200 reposts and 34,000 likes on X[10] in one week (shown below, right).
