Max And Ruby 0004 is a "lost episode" style of Creepypasta which the story centers around a narrator who buys their relative a Max and Ruby DVD for Christmas, only to watch it and the episode containing blood, gore, murder, and suicide and the narrator is left in shock and throws the DVD down the drain and then gets a letter from an unknown source saying "Death is our only release". The story originated on Creepypasta Wiki and was created by a user whose name was PiggyPoe, but eventually, American musician and animator Devin Millar created two animated adaptions of this story in 2014 and 2020. His work increased the popularity of this story and it became a household name among horror video and Creepypasta culture, even more so today.

History

The story first surfaced on the Creepypasta Wiki in 2013 and a Canadian user name Piggy Poe appears to have created the story. The page itself has been deleted in 2022 but reposts of the story appeared on other wikis. There were different revisions with side stories and elements but the most popular one is a more expanded one unlike the very original before getting deleted.

The Story

The story takes place on Christmas and the narrator buys a Max and Ruby DVD online but when it arrives, the package is greasy and the DVD has a poorly drawn picture of Max and Ruby. Once Christmas arrives their cousin opens up their presents and they both watch the DVD. But it has a menu screen that is black and white and has EPISODE_0001 to 4. They click on 0004 and all it shows is Max and Ruby standing in the dark and the cousin abruptly starts screaming and crying at the shocking sight.

Then it goes back to the menu where EPISODE_0004 has been replaced with "RIP Mommy and Daddy" and they watch this episode where it shows Max and Ruby's parents watching them play tag before the father says "It's such a shame" before cutting to a black screen with screaming and choking and then cutting to Max and Ruby standing before a tombstone that says "RIP Mommy and Daddy" (like what the episode was titled) and then it shows Max and Ruby crying in her room and revealing in footage behind them that their parents murdered each other.

Then Max is in his room preparing a noose and kicks the chair due to not being able to cope with their parents being dead and Ruby walking in on him and mourning for him. Pretty soon now it's just Ruby standing before the tombstone with an additional one saying "RIP Brother" and her turning to the camera with blue eyes declaring that the viewer will regret not watching her family's show. Then it shows her and Max waving from their house with a text at the bottom saying "Death is our only release". The narrator is left in shock and destroys the DVD before getting a letter the next day saying "Death is our only release" written on it.

2014 Devin Millar Version

In 2014, American musician and animator named Devin Millar created an animated version of the story on a side channel he created for the purpose called, SeeLight4Guy.

This is the most popular reupload of the first animated adaption by Devin Millar because the original uploads on SeeLight4Guy are deliberately age-restricted (to add to the scariness). He created this when he was 14 years old after creating I'm So Sorry Please Forgive Me.mp4 which also was another video he created at the time, and that too became famous on it's own.

The first animation became extremely popular and became a defining trait of the story since then, and users began creating memes and reaction videos of themselves watching it.

2020 Devin Millar Version

6 years later in 2020, Devin Millar created a second version of his animated video which was made to be an improvement from his original work. Here is the most popular reupload of it as he deliberately age-restricted the video just like what he did for his first one.

In 2022, Devin himself came forward and revealed to everyone he created the popular animated version of Max And Ruby 0004, both the first one in 2014 and it's remake in 2020. While most people believed it was him throughout history, others did not know it was him or did not believe him. He also shows evidence in this video to reveal he still keeps files and animation elements from it as memorabilia of his achievement.
