Me Drinking X refers to a phrasal template originally taken from videos of people (mostly YouTuber BadlandsChugs) drinking a beverage when a character, often from anime, tells them it's not the drink they thought. The subject ignores the warning and replies, "Me drinking not X." The snowclone became the subject of memes on TikTok, primarily in mid-2021 into early 2022.

Origin

On January 1st, 2013, YouTube^[1] user BadlandsChugs uploaded a video titled "64oz. Apple Juice Chug in under 15 Sec.". In the video, he drank a bottle of apple juice. The video received more than 86,000 views in 9 years (shown below).

Spread

On May 31st, 2021, TikToker^[2] @ryleqqh uploaded the earliest parody of BadlandsChugs' video, showing a clip of character Isaac "Zack" Foster from Satsuriku no Tenshi telling him that what he is drinking is not apple juice. The video only received 134 views (shown below).

The format didn't grow popular until January 2nd, 2022, when TikToker^[3] @perd9ll uploaded a parody featuring the character Lucifer from the game Obey Me!. The video received more than 500,000 views (shown below).

On February 21st, 2022, Facebook^[4] user Z Ik Ry uploaded a video showing a man drinking a bottle of cola when the Pempek Permata (Indonesian fishcake brand) mascot tells him it's the fishcake sauce "cuko." The video received more than 500 reactions and 1,100 shares (shown below, left). On February 25th, 2022, Facebook^[5] user Jerold Noynay uploaded to the "LowRes MKUltra" Facebook group a video of a man drinking a gallon of milk when the character Komi from Komi Can't Communicate tells him that it's not milk. The video received more than 5,500 reactions and 1,700 shares (shown below, right).
