Me vs. Animated Me is a photo comparison meme in which participants share a photograph of themself juxtaposed against an image of an animated character that they believe they resemble, either physically or in personality.
Origin
On June 15th, 2015, Tumblr [1] user baberellafox posted the earliest known usage of the meme. The post received more than 3,300 notes in less than six years (shown below).
Spread
The format mostly stayed dormant over the next five years. On June 22nd, 2020, a variation of the meme returned with a post from Twitter [2] user @AllHailLeslie that received more than 2,900 likes and 270 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left).
The following day, Twitter[3] user @ohh_livi_yuhh shared a variation that received more than 10,00 likes and 1,300 retweets in less than two days (shown below, center).
The trend continued over the week. On June 25th, voice actor ProZD tweeted[4] an image of himself next to the character Vaseraga, who he voices on the English-language version of Granblue Fantasy: Versus. The post received more than 6,600 likes and 460 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below).
