Mega Gay Zone refers to a catchphrase originating from a viral YouTube video in which Red Dead Redemption character Dutch van der Linde tells character Micah to "go to the Mega Gay Zone." The catchphrase gained significant spread in memes on TikTok in August 2020 and as a slang expression in September 2020.

Origin

On January 21st, 2020, YouTuber^[1] Disgusting Supernova uploaded a Kek or Cringe meme titled "SAUCE OR LOSS 4." In the meme, Red Dead Redemption and RDR2 character John Marston converts character Dutch van der Linde from liking traps to liking tomboys, with Dutch van der Linde banishing character Micah to "mega gay zone" when he attempts to intervene. The meme received over 452,000 views in eight months (shown below).

Spread

On June 25th, 2020, TikTok^[2] user memesandsomesauce uploaded the cropped clip, with the post gaining over 21,500 views and 1,800 likes in two months (shown below, left). On June 26th, memesandsomesauce^[3] posted the first meme which used the clip as a reaction, gaining over 3,200 views and 3,200 likes in the same period (shown below, right).

On July 3rd and 4th, YouTube users florangeorange^[4] and CZAR DOOM^[5] uploaded the cropped clip to YouTube, with the first upload gaining over 37,000 views in two months. Prior to July 22nd, TikTok user @hoezmadhaha posted the earliest viral meme based on the format (original post not available, YouTube reupload^[6] shown below).

The meme received further spread on TikTok^[7] after on August 7th, 2020, user @_realmoist_ posted a meme that received over 313,800 views and 42,600 likes, with multiple viral videos using the soundbite being posted in the following weeks. Additionally, the phrase "go to the Mega Gay Zone" received spread as a slang expression online, particularly as a retort.
