About

"Down Under" is a song recorded by Australian rock band Men at Work. The most well known version was then released on Columbia in 1981 as the third single from their debut album Business as Usual (1981). The intro of the song and occasionally the music video, have been used to comic effect in video edits.

Origin

The song 'Down Under' was released in 1981 and was later featured on Men at Work's debut album Business as Usual.[1] The song was first posted to YouTube in 2007 but the most watched version was posted by 'MenAtWorkVEVO' in 2013 with over 150 million views (shown below).

The first meme use of the song was from Nov 7th, 2015 by Kso Kek in which the percussive intro of the song was recreated by editing the footage of a teenager knocking himself out on a door frame. This video has over 40,000 views and has been part of meme compilations.

Spread

On June 15th, 2016, Memes posted a video which played the song over a video of a fish being hit with a boomerang, gaining over 133,000 views (shown below, left). The most successful use of the song in a video was done by kmlkmljkl on July 15th, 2016 in which the song was used instead of the noise of a screw dropping down a turbine engine.

From there the song has been used in multiple ways from Midi Art, Shrek, Gamecube Intro, and many more (examples shown below). In 2018, YouTube user Trent Drummond created a 'down under memes' playlist[2] which has over 400,000 views.
