About

Merida's Scottish Slang refers to a series of tweets and jokes based on a scene from the trailer for the 2018 animated film Ralph Breaks the Internet. In the scene, the character Merida from the Pixar film Brave vents in a thick Scottish brogue, which none of the other characters understand.

Origin

On August 11th, 2018, the official Twitter[1] account for IMDb tweeted a trailer for the film Ralph Breaks the Internet. In the trailer, there is a scene in which a group of Disney Princesses have a conversation. However, when Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) offers her opinion no one can understand.

That day, Twitter user @LizzRobinett tweeted the clip and translated: "I gave my mom a cake, she turned into a big bear. My old man tries to do her in. If that’s not a pure mess, I don’t know what is." The post (shown below) received more than 91,000 retweets and 253,000 likes in three days.

Spread

Following the release of the trailer, people online began posting screen captures of the moment and adding different captions that imitate the accent.

Twitter[2] user @AshokaTheBear tweeted, "Ye ever wanty just wrap yersel up in tin foil nice and cosy and then just fucking get right inty the microwave and blow yersel up tae fuck." The post (shown below, left) received more than 43,000 retweets and 138,000 likes in two days.
