About
A Moan Space or Moan Room is an audio-based chat room, often hosted on Clubhouse or Twitter, in which members take turns sexually moaning as authentically as they possibly can. This is often done for the sake of competition, with awards being given out by moan room hosts. The trend caught on throughout 2021, although its exact origins are unknown.
Origin
It is unknown who created the first Moan Space on Clubhouse, but posts joking about moan rooms began popping up on Twitter on December 17th, 2020. For example, on that date, Twitter[1] user @eb4prez posted, "Me in the CH moan room trying to win this Christmas money," along with a video clip of a woman moaning while singing, garnering over 2,100 likes and 580 retweets in seven months (shown below).

On that date, YouTuber[2] A1A EMPIRE posted a video showing a Moan Room on Clubhouse filled with hundreds of people, showcasing a man moaning sexually in competition for $300 (shown below). Throughout the clip a number of men moan, followed by judgment from a number of females. This is possibly the same space referenced in the above tweets, as well as the first popular Moan Room, although this is unconfirmed.
Notably, actor Lakeith Stanfield took part in this Clubhouse moan room and won, which was also uploaded to YouTube that day (shown below). According to an interview with Stanfield on the Higher Learning Podcast, Stanfield Googled "male moan" and found a video he could imitate, then did so, likening it to playing a character in a movie. He declined the $300 reward.[3]
Spread
Moan Rooms continued to pop up on Clubhouse throughout 2021, sometimes with cash prizes. Moan Spaces also became popular on Twitter via Twitter's Spaces feature, a similar voice-based chatroom feature on the platform.
On March 11th, 2021, Vice[4] published an article on a Clubhouse room where users moan like whales.
In late June, Dream SMP moderator Callahan was allegedly caught in a moan space, sparking a number of memes on Twitter[5] about the embarrassment of getting caught in Moan Spaces (example shown below).

The allegation was broken on June 26th by Twitter[6] user @CallahanUpdate in a now-deleted tweet (shown below). Notably, Callahan is only a listener, not necessarily a contributor to the Moan Space.
