Mommyjacking is an internet slang term referring to the practice of parents hijacking social media threads to talk about their own children.

Origin

The Tumblr blog STFUParents[6] is widely cited for popularizing the term "mommyjacking." On March 13th, 2009, the blog began highlighting social media posts made by parents who overshare or interrupt threads with information about their children.

Spread

On January 13th, 2010, Urban Dictionary[1] user Sloan3 submitted an entry for "mommyjacking," defining it as when a mother hijacks a conversation to talk about her children.

In January 2012, two entries for the phrase "mommy jacked" were submitted to Urban Dictionary.[4] On May 3rd, 2013, the pop culture blog Semiproper[7] highlighted several examples of mommyjacking on Facebook. On September 18th, 2014, Redditor amomentalone submitted a screenshot of a mommyjacking Instagram comment to /r/childfree[8] (shown below). On On January 27th, 2015, the parenting blog Mom.me[5] published a slideshow of mommyjacking Facebook posts.

Become a parent and see" to /r/childfree[3] (shown below). Over the next two weeks, the post received more than 1,700 points (90% upvoted) and 90 comments.
