About
Monitoring the Situation is a catchphrase used to describe the act of watching a situation closely to stay up-to-date on it and track its current status. While the phrase has been used in memes throughout the 2010s, it was popularized as a meme in June 2025, as people began posting memes about "monitoring the situation" from a funny place and generally using the phrase as a punchline to a variety of jokes.
Origin
It is unclear when the idea of monitoring the situation was first used as a meme. One early example was posted to ImgFlip[1] on October 27th, 2017, garnering over 2,400 views in eight years.

Spread
Memes about monitoring the situation became increasingly popularized, particularly on X, throughout 2025.
For example, on January 16th, 2025, X[2] user @netcapgirl posted a Masculine Urge meme reading, "the masculine urge to monitor the situation" over an image of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, garnering over 25,000 likes in five months.

On June 13th, 2025, X[3] user @as_a_worker made a Boss Makes A Dollar post reading, "Boss makes a dollar I make a dime that’s why I Monitor the Situation on company time," garnering over 23,000 likes and 1,200 reposts in three days.
Later that day, X[4] user @growing_daniel posted, "Men will literally monitor the situation instead of going to therapy," garnering over 6,000 likes in the same span of time.

On June 14th, X[5] user @Andr3jH posted a video of a cat looking out the window from a makeshift chair attached to the window, garnering over 8,500 likes in two days.

On June 15th, 2025, X[6] user @alxfazio posted an image of a map charting flights, showing many crashes and one plane safely flying in the middle, writing, "someone wasn’t monitoring the situation," garnering over 17,000 likes in a day.

That same day, X[7] user @BecomingCritter posted a screenshot of two X posts overtop of one another, offering an opinion on arguing with women and men, respectively, writing, "monitoring the situation," garnering over 35,000 likes in a day.
