About

Moto Moto Likes You refers to a scene in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa in which a hippo named Moto Moto slowly approaches some female hippos. This scene has been edited to replace Moto Moto with various characters.

Origin

On November 7th, 2008, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa was released.[1] On April 27, 2013, Mostafaabobakr7 posted the specific "Moto Moto Likes You" scene to YouTube (shown below). The video has gained over four million views and 15,000 likes in six years.

On December 19th, 2018, iFunny [6] user Herobrine_ posted a video remix of the scene, replacing the soundtrack with the FAttY SPiNS song "Don' Your Mom."

Spread

On December 31st, 2018, Redditor Inb625 posted an image to "/r/dankmemes" [2] of Sal put in the Moto Moto role. The post gained 14,600 points (97% upvoted) in a month (shown below).

On January 7th, 2019, Redditor Slothlev[3] added another Moto Moto edit this time with a real hippo replacing Moto which received 54 points (81% upvoted) in a month (shown below).

In late January, Instagram users began posting edited videos of the scene (shown below).

On February 2nd, 2019, PewDiePie included "Moto Moto Likes You" into a meme review video entitled "The ONLY one who can DEFEAT SHAGGY!" The video gained over six million views and 403,000 likes in four days (shown below).

After, PewDiePie's video there was a surge of new Moto memes. On February 3rd, redditor Styropian12[4] posted a "Let's See Who This Really Is" variation which received 10 points (92% upvoted) in three days (shown below, left). Two days later, Bigste2212[5] posted Moto Moto character meme which received 17 points (100% upvoted) in a day (shown below, right).
