Mouthgirl began in spring 2008, when approximately two dozen photos of a late-teens Asian girl were posted to the Bad-Control website, under the title, Does this chick ever close her mouth? The photos show the girl in various settings: parties, bathrooms, video arcades, etc. In each picture she has the same distinctive expression on her face: mouth wide open with tongue up, chin down, face angled at 3/4 to the camera.
The series of images were "discovered" by a number of websites (namely NASIOC and BARF), and the girl's face was Photoshopped into various car- and motorcycle-related images (keeping in mind the sites' demographics), as well as several illustrations and logos. Later the image spread to the Internet at large, but the core series of images are considered to be funny in and of themselves, due to the deadpan "smiley" expression in each image.
In the BARF forums, the pictures were initially posted under the thread name Mouthgirl; the images (and subject) were subsequently referred to by this name.
