My Grandpa Was Such A Vibe refers to a series of parody tweets in which Twitter users post edited, black-and-white photos of currently famous people with the caption "My Grandpa was such a vibe in the '40s."
Origin
On April 1st, 2021, Twitter user @awdummy[3] tweeted the You Know I Had To Do It To Em picture edited to be in black and white with the caption, "My grandpa was such a vibe in the 40s," gaining over 700 retweets and 6,500 likes (shown below).
Spread
Later on April 1st, Twitter user @ranchsqueezer[1] tweeted an edited, black-and-white still from Casey Frey's 'Get TF Out My Way' Video with the caption, "My Grandpa was such a vibe in the 40s," gaining over 71,000 retweets and 644,000 likes (shown below, left). @ranchsqueezer's tweet inspired others to create parodies of their own. Later on April 1st, Twitter user @saeeddicaprio[2] posted the joke with Walmart Yodel Boy, gaining over 38,000 retweets and 433,000 likes (shown below, right).
Though the meme originated with popular meme pictures, it later became a fandom meme, as people posted more idols and popular singers with the caption. On April 3rd, user @crystalcmakeupp[4] posted a picture of Gerard Way from the music video for My Chemical Romance's "Ghost Of You," gaining over 5,000 retweets and 28,000 likes (shown below, left). On April 2nd, 2021, user @TSUNAMIMUSICx[5] posted the joke using pictures of Skrillex, gaining over 150 retweets and 1,300 likes (shown below, right).
