Origin

On October 21st, 2017, Redditor amnhandley posted a series of photographs showing photographs of his son crying after reading All my friends are dead while sitting in a shopping cart (shown below). Within four days, the post, titled "My son did not enjoy this book. 0/10. Do not recommend," gained over 74,200 points (85% upvoted) and 1,400 comments.

On October 21st, the @LaterCapitalism^[7] Twitter feed tweeted an edited version of the image with the book Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand printed on the cover (shown below).

On October 22nd, 2017, Redditor That_Vest submitted a Tragedy of Darth Plagueis version of the image to /r/PrequelMemes^[1] subreddit, where it received more than 2,400 points (99% upvoted) within 72 hours. That day, Redditor Tolya7777 posted a variation with the news headline "Meme trading cards are now a thing" to /r/dankmemes.^[3]

Meanwhile, Redditor Mad_Cowboy posted a Garlic Bread variation to /r/GarlicBreadMemes^[4] (shown below, left). Also on October 22nd, Redditor NubbynJr posted a Runescape-themed variation to the /r/runescape^[5] subreddit (shown below, right). Additionally, Redditor ImagineHydras submitted a variation to /r/MemeEconomy,^[6] where it garnered upwards of 25,400 points (85% upvoted) and 330 comments within 72 hours.
