Naked Oppenheimer in a Chair is a still image of Oppenheimer character J. Robert Oppenheimer (portrayed by actor Cillian Murphy) sitting naked in a chair, covering his mouth with his hand as if in thought. In late July 2023 following the film's release, the screengrab was popularized on Twitter as a source material for image caption memes.

Origin

On July 21st, 2023, the biographical drama film Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, premiered.^[1] In one scene, Oppenheimer and his lover Jean Tatlock are sitting naked in chairs in a hotel room (image shown below).

On July 29th, 2023, Twitter^[2] user @BonerWizard tweeted a still image of the naked Oppenheimer sitting in an armchair scene, captioning it with a joke about raiding the refrigerator at night. The post (shown below) received over 11,900 retweets and 141,000 likes in five days.

In the following days, the still image achieved virality on Twitter as source material for image caption memes. For example, on July 30th, 2023, Twitter^[3] user @trunarla posted a meme that gained over 3,000 retweets and 21,800 likes in four days (shown below, left). On July 31st, Twitter^[4] user @FORESTGREENE captioned the image, "me staring at his booty as he tries to find his clothes," with the tweet gaining over 8,500 retweets and 92,800 likes in three days (shown below, right).

The image format maintained popularity in early August 2023, with several versions going viral on Twitter. In some examples, the image has been compared to the Pointing Rick Dalton meme format.
