About
Nathan Fielder With His Laptop is an exploitable image of comedian Nathan Fielder from his 2022 HBO show The Rehearsal holding a laptop in a harness and observing the action. The picture of Fielder is typically photoshopped into a variety of other media, depicting Fielder orchestrating the actions of the characters as he does the people in The Rehearsal.
Origin
The image of Nathan Fielder comes from episode two of The Rehearsal, released on July 29th, 2022, in which he helps a man rehearse a difficult conversation about an inheritance with his brother at a Raising Cane's fried chicken restaurant (excerpt clip shown below).
The earliest meme found photoshopping the image (seen below) was tweeted on August 5th, 2022, by Twitter user @MenForFielder, depicting Nathan Fielder in Seinfeld. The tweet earned over 9,000 likes in three days.[1]
The image had, however, been used in other meme-type contexts on Twitter previously. On August 2nd, 2022, Twitter user @kthrn_lcs tweeted an image of Fielder with the laptop paired with a news bulletin about how the U.S. military constructed a scale model of terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri's house in order to rehearse killing him.[2]
Spread
Memes of Nathan Fielder with his laptop harness gained further traction on August 6th, 2022, after Twitter user @kate___ali tweeted a series of photoshops of the comedian in different forms of media. The first of this series (seen below), which showed Nathan Fielder in the film Before Midnight, earned almost 7,000 likes in two days.[3]
Twitter user @MenForFielder continued posting memes over the following days as well. An August 7th meme picturing Fielder in a scene from The Sopranos received almost 8,000 likes in less than a day.[4]
Many joked about making a Nathan Fielder Halloween costume by buying a laptop harness online. Twitter user @EricFrancisco, tweeting on August 8th, was one of these, earning 10 likes in the course of a day (seen below).[5]
The image of Fielder with his laptop came to be one of the most recognizable from the show. The New Yorker's new review of the show notably features a drawn rendering (seen below) of Fielder with the laptop.[6]
