About
I Hope You're Hungry… For Nothing is an exploitable image macro meme format based on a scene from the comedy series Nathan For You in which comedian Nathan Fielder prepares to lift the lid off of a silver platter for a man on a boat, says, "I hope you're hungry," then takes the lid off and finishes his sentence, "for nothing," revealing there to be no food on the tray. The scene comes from season two, episode seven, titled "Taxi Service; Hot Dog Stand," and aired on August 12th, 2014. It became the subject of memes as early as 2017 and is often used as an object-labeling format in which the empty tray represents something disappointing, with Fielder and the man labeled as the subjects.
Origin
On August 12th, 2014, Nathan For You season two, episode seven aired. Part of the episode sees Nathan attempt to drum up business for Pink's Hot Dogs in Los Angeles by testing a rule that lets people skip ahead in line if they can prove they were in a hurry.
At one point in the episode, he lures a man named Jonathan, who could not prove he was in a hurry, onto a boat with the promise of a free lunch, claiming he was the 10-millionth Pink's Hot Dogs customer. When he arrives with the serving dish, he reveals that there is nothing inside the dish, then puts it in front of four people whom he cut in front of in the line at Pink's.[1]
On January 9th, 2017, X[2] user @MonrovianPrince posted a meme using the scene in which Nathan reveals the empty dish, labeling Nathan "My Twitter," Jonathan "My Followers," and the empty tray, "Good Tweets," garnering over 2,000 likes in eight years. This is the earliest known use of the scene as a meme.
