About

Ned Leeds Just Standing There refers to an exploitable image of the Spider-Man character Ned Leeds, played by Jacob Batalon, dressed in a magenta shirt and blue jeans standing with a blank expression facing sideways. In late December 2021, the exploitable gained virality in memes, being edited and photoshopped into various images out of context.

Origin

On September 6th, 2016, celebrity gossip and entertainment news company Just Jared[11] posted a collection of photographs from the set of the 2017 superhero film Spider-Man: Homecoming. In one photograph actors Tom Holland and Jacob Batalon (who plays Ned Leeds) stand next to each other (shown below, left).

On May 28th, 2021, artist mjdartworks posted a fan-made poster for the then-upcoming superhero film Spider-Man: No Way Home to Instagram,[1] with the post gaining over 1,000 likes in seven months (shown below, right). In the poster, a cutout of Batalon from the 2016 photograph was placed on an edge of a rooftop, with the character appearing out of place. The transparent PNG of Ned Leeds used in the image was posted by DeviantArt[5] user DarthSpiderMaul on March 19th, 2020.

Perhaps it's the fact that this is Marvel trying to make up for the squandered potential of Hobgoblin from the comics where he was this mysterious character where they spent several years hyping up his mystery identity and while the writer had created a character to be revealed as the Hobgoblin, his Editor decided to fuck him over for literally no reason and say "Nah, I don't care what your idea was. Hobgoblin is Ned Leeds." thus killing all the hype behind him because nobody believed that Ned could be this villain with a near limitless supply of money and resources when he's just a little better off than Peter was.

Makes sense, Marvel hired that writer to come back a decade later and make a new Hobgoblin story the way he intended with the character he introduced being revealed as the Hobgoblin, and the MCU makes Ned Leeds a random friend of Peter's like he was always supposed to be.
