About
NES Princess Peach Sprite Redraws is a pixel art trend on X (formerly Twitter) and BlueSky that redraws the sprite of Princess Peach from the 1985 NES game Super Mario Bros. in different styles. The trend started in early-mid September of 2024, and has also led to other artists drawing these redesigns as modern digital art. The trend also inspired some artists to draw humorous interpretations of NES sprite Princess Peach, sometimes depicting her with a big Popeye-like chin and finger guns.
Origin
The trend started on September 9th, 2024, when Twitter / X[1] artist @JUSTIN_CYR posted a redesign of the sprite of Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros. (SMB) with a more slender figure, a more defined face, and wearing a more revealing dress. The artwork (shown below) received over 9,200 likes and over 845 reposts in five days.
However, there have been previous attempts to redraw Princess Peach's NES SMB sprite, as seen in an October 31st, 2023 post by X[4] user @HarryGoldArtist, who captioned their art, "Princess Peach but she looks like her NES sprite," gathering over 9,000 likes in a year.
Spread
In the following days, various pixel artists attempted their own redesigns of the Princess Peach sprite, including X[2] user @cyan_square, who gathered over 3,000 likes on a September 12th, 2024 post showing a version of Peach with her hands clasped and her eyes wide.
Also on September 12th, X[3] user @DonMarramiau posted their version of the SMB Peach sprite, gathering over 8,000 likes in three days.
As the trend continued, some internet users began posting humorous and unflattering redesigns of Princess Peach's NES sprite, as seen in a September 13th, 2024 post by X[5] user @zachisagardner, who gathered over 2,000 likes in three days.
On September 14th, X[6] user @GabaghoulComics posted a comic showing the difference between Princess Peach's sprite's ideal interpretation and literal interpretation, showing a cartoon, big-chinned version of her pointing her finger and saying, "Eyyy this guy!" The post gathered over 40,000 likes in a day.
