Not Funny, Didn't Laugh refers to a phrasal reaction and a series of memes initially circulated on iFunny which gained significant presence on YouTube and Instagram in early July 2019.

Origin

The exact origin of the phrase is currently unknown. On September 20th, 2018, iFunny User memethief6969 posted the earliest known image containing the caption, with the post gaining 2 smiles (shown below).^[1]

Spread

In the following months, the phrase has been used as a phrasal reaction and meme caption by multiple users on iFunny (examples shown below). For example, on October 30th, iFunny user NearRetrograde used the phrase in a comment, gaining 9 smiles .^[2] On December 16th, 2018, user Dyatlov posted a Masked Wojak meme captioned with the phrase which received 28 smiles.^[3]

In the first half of 2019, more examples of the meme were posted online on iFunny and other sites. On April 4th, 2019, YouTube user FroggoTV reuploaded the first known voiced Not Funny Didn't Laugh meme,^[4] supposedly from iFunny (shown below, left). More video versions of the meme were posted in the following months.

On July 1st, 2019, user JeffSwiper posted a Netflix edit of the meme to Instagram,^[5] Twitter^[6] and YouTube,^[7] gaining over 3,300, 81,800 and 2,700 views in two days, respectively.

In the following hours, multiple users on all three platforms posted their versions of the meme, including notable edits by Cyranek, ^[8] @wooby_osu^[9] and admblackhawk.^[10]
