Nothing Stronger Than Family

About

Nothing Stronger Than Family refers to a catchphrase associated with the character Dominic Toretto, portrayed by Vin Diesel, from the Fast and Furious franchise. Following the release of the film F9: The Fast Saga in late June 2021, the catchphrase inspired photoshops and image macros featuring Diesel espousing the power of familial relationships, often placing Diesel in other films and humorous contexts.

Origin

In Fast & Furious film series, protagonist Dominic Toretto and his crew consider each other family, talk about its importance and express willingness to take risks and make sacrifices to protect each other. On March 14th, 2017, Insider posted a YouTube^[10] compilation of 33 times the word "family" was said in the parts one to seven of the franchise (video shown below).

On June 28th, 2021, Redditor^[11] Adronikos uploaded the first-known example of the format by adding Dominic Toretto to a Star Wars scene to /r/PrequelMemes subreddit. The scene shows Toretto saying, "You don't need logic when you got family." The image received more than 44,400 upvotes in ten days. Few hours later, Facebook^[1] page Geek Culture reposted the image, with the repost accumulating over 4,100 reactions and 4,900 shares in one week (shown below).

On the same day, Facebook^[5] page Comic Tube reposted the image, with the repost accumulating over 84,000 reactions and 41,000 shares in one week.

Over the following several days, the format became popular among Facebook users. For example, on July 3rd, 2021, Geek Culture^[2] page uploaded a meme using a different Star Wars scene, receiving more than 3,700 reactions and 3,900 shares (shown below, left). On July 4th, Facebook page My Marvel^[3] uploaded an edited image from Avengers: End Game. The image received more than 24,000 reactions and 3,800 shares (shown below, center). Also that day, Facebook page Resident Evil Lore Indonesia^[4] uploaded an image from Resident Evil. The image received 521 reactions and 92 shares (shown below, right).

The format began seeing significant use on Twitter over the weekend of July 3rd. For example, on July 4th, Twitter user HowieBling^[6] posted an example from Guardians of the Galaxy, gaining over 34,000 retweets and 220,000 likes (shown below, left). On July 5th, user @Rolo_oc^[7] posted a Home Alone-themed variation, gaining over 5,900 retweets and 29,000 likes (shown below, right).

On July 6th, Lessons In Meme Culture posted a video going into the trending meme, gaining over 96,000 views in less than one day. The meme was also covered by Daily Dot^[8] and Twitter Events.^[9]
