Fast and Furious refers to the film franchise created by Gary Scott Thompson in 2001. The film franchise was originally about street racing but slowly transitioned into having large action sequences and espionage mixed with driving sections. The franchise itself has nine mainline movies, as well as various spinoffs, video games, toys, theme park rides and a streaming-only TV show. Throughout its extensive life, the F&F franchise has produced several meme formats in addition to many others referencing its characters, tropes or other aspects.

History

The first movie in the franchise, The Fast and The Furious, was released on June 22nd, 2001, and had a string of sequels to follow it: 2 Fast 2 Furious on June 6th, 2003, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift on June 16th, 2006, Fast & Furious on April 3rd, 2009, Fast Five on April 29th, 2011, Fast & Furious 6 on May 24th, 2013, Furious 7 on April 3rd, 2015, and The Fate of the Furious on April 14th, 2017.

There are several key moments throughout the franchise that help in understanding its prominence in both pop culture and internet culture, as the stories are not shown in sequential order. Despite being the third one in the series, Tokyo Drift actually takes place after every other movie released before Furious 7. Fast Five is seen as the turning point where the series went from car racing to action-packed gunfights and explosions. The death of lead actor Paul Walker in 2013 had a dramatic impact on the film franchise, leading to a new replacement for its lead.

Online Presence

Being a two-decade-old series, the Fast and Furious franchise has had a significant online presence from the first movie onward. Helping this cause is the very consistent time between movie releases, being roughly two or three years between installments. This continuous rollout means that every few years, the online fanbase and social media accounts receive an injection of new content and publicity, keeping it relevant until the next one.

Skim Beeble
