About

Oi Josuke is a phrase said by the manga and anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure character Okuyasu Nijimura which he on one occasion uses to address his friend Josuke Higashikata. Starting in May 2019, a series of memes in which Okuyasu says the quote and proceeds to cite various historical facts gained popularity in the anime community.

Origin

In part four of manga and anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure character Okuyasu Nijimura often addresses his friend Josuke Higashikata by saying "Yo, Josuke." In the anime adaptation, the phrase first appears in episode five "The Nijimura Brothers, Part 3" of the series (shown below).[1] On one occasion, in episode six of the anime series, aired on May 6th, 2016, Okuyasu addresses Josuke by saying "Oi, Josuke."[12] The earliest notable instance of the quote being used in memes can be traced to parody cartoon "JoJos Bizarre Whatever," uploaded by YouTuber ArinsMind on August 28, 2017 (shown below, right).[2]

In the following years, the catchphrase has often appeared in posts on Reddit, YouTube, 4chan and other online platforms. Until May 2019, the quote has seen limited use in memes about the character (examples shown below).[3][4]

On March 25th, 2019, Redditor Eqqquinox used Okuyasu's render for 2013 video game JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle for a Peter Griffin Explains the Joke -style meme which gained over 7,900 upvotes in three months (shown below, left).[5] On May 1nd, 2019, Redditor ILikeMonitorLizards made a similar style meme in which Okuyasu cited a historical fact about the American Civil War aftermath, posting it to /r/ShitpostCrusaders[6] and /r/ChapoTrapHouse[7] subreddits and gaining over 1,600 and 180 upvotes in two months, respectively (shown below, center). On May 2nd, 2019, ILikeMonitorLizards posted another meme based on the format to /r/ShitpostCrusaders (shown below, right),[8] gaining over 3,200 upvotes in two months.
