Origin

On March 18th, 2019, the first poster for the film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was released online. That day, Leonardo DiCaprio shared the poster on Twitter, adding the caption "Hollywood. 1969." The post received more than 53,000 retweets and 181,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below).[5]

Spread

That day, Redditor [1] ryanx869 posted the poster on the /r/movies subreddit. The post received more than 70,000 points (91% upvoted) and 3,600 comments in 24 hours.

That day, people online began mocking the poster, both for its design as well as its resemblance to other movie posters. New York Times writer Dave Itzkoff photoshopped the logo for the comedy film Dude, Where's My Car? into the poster (shown below, left).[2] Vulture writer Jackson McHenry compared the image to the romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. The post received more than 650 retweets and 4,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below, center).[3] Yahoo Movies editor Tom Butler photoshopped images of Kevin James and Matthew McConaughey into the image. The post received more than 100 retweets and 1,300 likes in 24 hours (shown below, right).[4]

Several media outlets covered the poster, including TIME,[6] Uproxx,[7] ET[8] and more.
