About

One-Up America is an advice animal image macro series featuring a photograph of a bald eagle in front of a United States flag with captions typically depicting American patriotism or hubris.

Origin

The original photograph of the bald eagle, titled "Bald Eagle Portait #010," was taken by American nature and wildlife photographer Bob Rozinski and uploaded to his online portfolio at DancingPelican.com (shown below, left).[7]

On August 6th, 2012, Redditor submitted an image macro titled "One-Up America" to the /r/AdviceAnimals[4] subreddit, featuring a bald eagle picture with the caption "Sees Britain is hosting Olympics / Lands on Mars" (shown above, right) in reference to the Curiosity Mars rover landing.

On August 9th, 2012, the Internet news blog UpRoxx[2] published an article about the image macro series. On the following day, the viral content site BuzzFeed[3] highlighted several notable examples from the series. On December 18th, Redditor annoyedturtle submitted an image macro to the /r/Murica[5] subreddit, which joked about anti-American stereotypes juxtaposed with United States' achievements (shown below, left). Prior to being archived, the post accumulated upwards of 1,600 up votes and 60 comments. On March 7th, 2013, Redditor Felacio submitted an image macro to the /r/AdviceAnimals[6] subreddit, pointing out the United States' history of military operations (shown below, right). Within three months, the post garnered more than 740 up votes and 40 comments.
