About

Oshkosh US Postal Service Truck refers to the redesign of the standard United States Postal Service delivery truck developed by defense contractor Oshkosh. Compared to the current design, the truck is sleeker, with a lower engine and a much larger windshield. They are planned to see use beginning in 2023. After the design was posted to social media, it inspired many jokes, particularly comparing the truck's design to the characters in Disney-Pixar's Cars.

Origin

The United States Postal Service began soliciting ideas for new trucks in 2015.[1] The current standard truck, a Grumman LLV (shown below), was developed in the 1980s. It has been described by The Verge as "woefully out of date," citing the truck's lack of an air conditioner, and "a major fire hazard."

On February 23rd, 2021, the United States Postal Service[2] announced it had signed a 10-year contract with Wisconsin-based defense contractor Oshkosh to produce new trucks. The trucks will have more cargo space, ergonomic design, and can be fitted with both gasoline and electric drivetrains. The design will also feature a large front windshield, making it easier for drivers to see pedestrians (shown below). Oshkosh is finalizing details on the design, and the trucks are not scheduled to go into service until 2023.

After images of the proposed design were posted to social media, many users made jokes about the unusual look of the truck. Multiple people compared the truck to the look of the character designs in Cars. For example, user @TristenJWinger[3] joked, "Pixar got a new movie coming out?", gaining over 4,000 retweets and 34,000 likes (shown below, left). User @KristianBob[4] posted a photoshopped edit of the truck with Cars eyes, gaining over 440 retweets and 2,000 likes (shown below, right). These kinds of jokes were covered by Uproxx.[5]

Other jokes about the design include a post by @sc0wll,[6] who said it looked like a character from Big Mouth (shown below, left) and a post by @EmericanJohnson[7] who said it looked like the Gadgetmobile mid-transform (shown below, right).

I was training to be a Rural Carrier before realizing I hate doing the profession and would be happier elsewhere. Visibility while driving is one of the things they cover massively in training, covering the like 15 mirrors the truck has and how to always check every single one of them before putting the vehicle in motion. The new design definitely seems made with the mindset of visibility > all the rest which I support.

Looks ugly as shit but if it keeps people safe I'm for it.
