Parry This You Filthy Casual refers to an image macro series of knights holding guns paired with the phrase. The phrase refers to the parry function in Dark Souls and the Filthy Casual meme.
Origin
On January 1st, 2018, iFunny [1] LeStormtrooper posted the earliest known usage of the meme. In just over two years, the image received more than 58,000 reactions and 1,200 comments (shown below).
Spread
Over the following year, variations on the idea of a knight holding guns saying the phrase appeared sporadically throughout the internet. On June 7th, 2018, such a joke appeared on Funnyjunk, posted by user elduroto[2] (shown below, left). On January 3rd, 2019, an image of a dog in a suit of armor was paired with the phrase on 9GAG,[3] gaining over 3,700 points (shown below, right).
In March of 2019, the original image began seeing a resurgence on Reddit. On March 14th, Redditor Driver_Vincent posted it as a reaction image referring to a scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark to /r/dankmemes, gaining over 47,000 points (shown below, left). The following day, user MyDogGotYeeted posted another Raiders of the Lost Ark reference to the subreddit, gaining over 620 points (shown below, right).
