Peidaro refers to a Portuguese catchphrase and image macro based on a cat with his paw on his snout and the Portuguese text "peidaro," which can be interpreted as Someone Farted in English. The meme became popular around 2021 and is also reproduced with other images of people showing feelings of disgust or using gas masks with the overlay text.
Origin
The earliest available post featuring the "peidaro" meme was uploaded on July 22nd, 2015, on the meme website Piras.[1] The post (seen below) features a baby making an expressive facial reaction and the overlay text "peidaro* ([someone] farted).
Spread
On June 30th, 2021, Reddit[2] user /u/Due_Palpitation8658 posted a screenshot of a deleted Instagram post with a new version of the "peidaro" meme, featuring an old picture of a kid wearing a gas mask and the overlay text "Student with diarrhea and 5 kilos of shit in his pants trying to hide it." The post, seen below, received 66 upvotes and 7 comments in 2 years.
On May 15th, 2022, Reddit[3] user /u/Videre26 posted the image of a cat seemingly covering his nose because of a bad smell with the Portuguese text "peidaro." The post (seen below) garnered 269 upvotes and 4 comments in a year.
