About
Alice Guo, whose Chinese name is Guo Hua Ping, is an ex-mayor of a municipality in the Philippines's Tarlac province that was arrested over allegations of being a Chinese spy after a federal investigation revealed contradictions in her documents and testimony that claims she is a Filipino citizen. The Senate hearings probing Guo's citizenship and subsequent arrest became popular meme material for social media users nationwide.
Senate Hearing
In May 2024, a Senate hearing questioned Guo about her ties with China and the country's illegal online gambling industry. Local news channel GMA uploaded a video of the hearing on YouTube that has garnered 2.6 million views. The video went viral because Guo feigned ignorance and simply stated "I couldn't remember" to the Senate's basic questions on personal background such as who is her mother and where did she attend high school.[2] The Philippine's National Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Guo's fingerprints matched Guo Hua Ping's fingerprints, a Chinese national in the NBI's database.
Escape and Arrest
Alice Guo and family members fled from the Philippines during the Senate investigation. Their escape drew significant media and national attention. Indonesian authorities detained Guo and returned her to the Philippines. Upon her arrival, Guo was arrested and has been participating in the hearings to address other inquiries from government officials, such as her potential involvement in the country's online gambling industry.
Online Presence
Local news agencies have reported on the deluge of memes Alice Guo's controversy has generated. A May 2024 article from online magazine Woman.ph that garnered more than 4,500 views called Guo "The Internet's New Favorite Mystery."[3] Inquirer.net published an article titled "Internet erupts in memes after the arrest of dismissed Bamban mayor Alice Guo in Indonesia"[4] and Rappler called Guo the "meme of the month."[5]
Early Life
The details about Alice Guo's early life is unclear and disputed by the Philippine government. Guo claims to be born and raised in the Philippines but documents reviewed by federal investigators reveal contradictions and inconsistencies. Prior to the Senate hearing, Alice Guo was in a video showcasing her chicken farm saying "bye bye chickens" that was reuploaded by Beth Aglasi during Guo's hearing with the Senate and subsequent escape.[1]
