Malik Obama is the Kenyan half-brother of the 44th President of the United States Barack Obama, who has served as a consultant in Washington, D.C. During the 2016 United States presidential election, Obama gained much notoriety online for his support of Republican candidate Donald Trump and for frequently tweeting internet meme references via his verified Twitter[3] account.

History

During the 2008 presidential race, Malik Obama served as spokesman for the extended Obama family in Kenya while his half-brother Barack ran for president in the United States. In 2013, Obama ran for governor of the Kenyan county Siaya and was defeated by opponent Oburu Oginga.[7]

2016 United States Presidential Election

On July 24th, 2016, the New York Post[6] published an interview with Obama, who revealed he planned to vote for Donald Trump in the 2016 United States presidential election. On October 19th, 2016, Fox News broadcast an interview with Obama in which he discussed his disappointment with his brother's presidency with host Sean Hannity (shown below).



Online Presence

In June 2011, Obama launched the @ObamaMalik[1] Twitter feed, gathering more than 113,000 followers within six years. On August 5th, 2016, the crowdfunding site Wesearchr released an interview with Obama, in which he endorses Donald Trump for president while wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat (shown below).



On October 29th, his account was verified by Twitter.[8] On October 31st, Obama participated in an "ask me anything" (AMA) post on the /r/The_Donald[9] subreddit, which gained over 46,700 votes (63% upvoted) and 2,100 comments within one month. On December 13th, Obama posted a series a tweets saying he was "high on memes" and that "Mountain Dew is for cucks" (shown below).[2]

In the coming days, the news sites Mediaite[4] and BuzzFeed[5] published articles about Obama's Twitter presence, referring to him as an alt-right "darling" and "Twitter troll," claiming he had been influenced by conservative journalist Chuck Johnson (shown below).
