The Big Sartorialist (@thebigsartorialist) is the online handle of Boston-based men's fashion influencer Dan Newman. Known for his portly figure, bowler hats and dapper suits, The Big Sartorialist achieved viral success on TikTok and other social media in the 2020s and has since appeared in fancams and memes.

Online History

In January 2011, Boston-based fashion influencer Dan Newman launched his Instagram[1] account thebigsartorialist. Newman launched an X[2] / Twitter account in January 2013, followed by a YouTube[3] account in January 2016 and a TikTok[4] account in July 2021.

On his social media, The Big Sartorialist posts photographs and videos of himself wearing suits and other menswear, usually listing items comprising his outfit in the description (example posts from between 2016 and 2024 shown below).

TheBigSartorialist started gaining more online recognition in the early 2020s as his followership gradually grew. On August 8th, 2023, the Boston Globe published[5] an interview with the influencer.

In 2023, TheBigSartorialist started including more humor in his videos posted on YouTube and Instagram, sometimes referencing modern memes. For example, on April 5th, 2023, @thebigartorialist uploaded a video that received over 267,800 views and 41,000 likes on TikTok[6] in one year (shown below, left). On July 10th, @thebigartorialist posted a video that received over 319,000 likes on TikTok[7] in eight months (shown below, right).

From TikTok, TheBigSartorialist's saw further spread on social media through reposts. For example, on March 7th, 2024, X[8] / Twitter user @legotrillermoth reposted a video in which TheBigSartorialist's referenced Gen Z and Gen Alpha memes, with the reupload gaining over 184,000 views, 350 reposts and 4,000 likes on X in one day (shown below).

On TikTok, referring to TheBigSartorialist's as "plug" (as in "content plug") and commenting with combinations of modern slang and old-fashioned words has been a popular meme within the influencer's audience (examples shown below).

Derek Guy, commonly known as the Twitter Menswear Guy, is a menswear writer known for his critique of men's apparel on Twitter. Posting since February 2011, the writer achieved notable recognition online in 2023 thanks to his tweets in which he insulted the clothing choices of right-wing personalities and was mysteriously promoted by Twitter's algorithm.
