Perro Pelón, or Bald Dog in English, refers to a series of Photoshopped images of dogs with bald heads that went viral in April 2021. The most prominent image shows a Schnauzer dog with a bad haircut, making the animal seem like a human.

Origin

On April 1st, 2021, Facebook^[1] user Fatima Diaz Funes posted a series of pictures of her dog with the caption in Spanish "I wanted to give my dog ​​a haircut and now I want him to leave my house, it scares me." The images (seen below) show the dog with a shaved head and a sinister stare. The post garnered 107,000 likes and 574,000 shares in two years.

On April 2nd, 2021, the dog owner explained (seen below original comment) that she used an Instagram filter to create the baldness effect in the pictures.

Spread

The image of the bald dog was widely spread on social media, inspiring ironic memes and Photoshop edits of other animals with their heads shaved. On July 26th, 2021, YouTuber^[2] musicoscinicos uploaded a parody music video titled "perro pelón" (English: "bald dog") featuring several images of different bald dog memes. The video (seen below) garnered 74,000 views and 4,100 likes in two years.

On April 2nd, 2021, TikTok^[3] user @noescataliinaleiiva uploaded a comedy skit video talking about things that scare her and showing the bald dog image as an example. The video (seen below, left) received 28,200 plays and 2,700 likes in two years. Another TikToker,^[4] user @todinho_l, posted a bald golden retriever picture with the overlay text in Portuguese "Dog barks at the Bible and wakes up bald." The video (seen below, right) garnered 69,200 plays and 342 likes in four months.
