About

Pipo is one of the two dogs you can choose at the start of the game Firewatch. The word has become viral in the Spanish community and even spreading to English twitch channels.

Origin

On July 7ᵗʰ, 2017, famous youtuber and streamer Alexelcapo decided to stream on twitch the game Firewatch, and complete it the same day^[1]. During the gameplay, one of the choices he had to make at the start of a game was choosing between two dogs, a small beagle called "Pipo", and a German shepherd called "Atila"^[2]. He decides to choose the beagle, because it was the one it made Julia, one of the characters in the game, happy. He also said that he liked the name, making fun of it by pronouncing it separately (Pi po). It soon became a meme, with him doing various jokes during the parts in the game in which they talked about Pipo, and people started spamming it on chat. After the streaming ended, the meme was almost forgotten.

Spread

On August 3ʳᵈ, youtube user Maskter published a video called "La Leyenda del Perro Pipo Gambino"^[3], that used Alexelcapo's voice saying "Pipo" repeatedly. which soon became famous after being discovered by fans and being tweeted by Alexelcapo^[4]. At the time of writing this, the video has over one million views^[3].

Soon after different parodies with other songs featuring the same audio clips with different songs started appearing, which made the phrase even more famous than before.

During the 2017 LVP EU Championship, the manager of the Spanish Twitch channel temporarily used Maskter's song as background song before the official streaming occurred. You can see a video below:

Alexelcapo's opinion

Alexelcapo has said in various occasions that the meme has gone overboard^[5] and he has described it as "tiring and boring"^[6].

Raids

Alexelcapo has done numerous raids to other twitch streamers, consisting in hosting them and sending most of his viewers there to spam a selected word in chat, most of the times being "Pipo".
Some of the streamers have even singed Maskter's song^[3] even without understanding parts of it.
