Playing "Electric Feel" by MGMT on Bass refers to a clip of TikTok musician @mynameisnotdrew playing the song "Electric Feel" by MGMT on the bass guitar. In the clip, the performer jumps and dances as he plays. For many, his actions seemed excessive in comparison to the laid-back feel of the song. This inspired parodies where people overzealously rock out while playing simple or otherwise humorous music.

Origin

On September 28th, 2022, TikTok^[1] user @mynameisnotdrew posted a video of himself playing "Electric Feel" by MGMT, jumping and headbanging as he does so. The video gained over 115,000 likes in under five months (shown below).

Spread

As the video spread on TikTok, some users commented that it seemed as though @mynameisnotdrew was "rocking out" too hard in comparison to the simplicity of the bass line and the feel of the song. This led to parodies where users played simple and calm melodies on other instruments but acted as though they were playing something heavy, complex and exciting. For example, on November 12th, 2022, user @donnyx211 posted a parody showing them headbanging as they played a ringtone on a guitar. The clip gained over 1.8 million likes in three months (shown below, left). On October 7th, user @phonographicmaterial made a similar parody, playing "Blackbird" by The Beatles on an acoustic guitar, gaining over 120,000 likes in four months (shown below, right).
