Portable Watermelon Cooler refers to a product created by Joybond which allows owners to push a watermelon around in a type of pram while it keeps fresh. The product became the source of jokes on Reddit in early 2019.

Origin

The product, called the Marugoto Tamachan, was created by Japanese company Joybond in 2010. After its production, it was quickly mocked by blogs for its high price and niche concept.^[1] On January 11th, 2019, Redditor rubberneckingduck^[2] posted an I Bet There Will Be Flying Cars joke about the product to /r/memes, gaining over 5,800 likes (shown below).

Spread

The post inspired multiple jokes about the watermelon cooler on Reddit in the coming days. Most were anti-meme style jokes which used "Watermelon Cooler" as a punchline. Some popular examples include an anti-meme variation posted by user OutInTheHam^[3] that gained over 4,500 points (shown below, left). User Loopy_beetle made another anti-joke that gained over 13,000 points (shown below, right).
