About
Princess Charm is a character featured in a trailer for the multiplayer action game Knockout City in the February 17th, 2021 Nintendo Direct. She is an homage to classic video game princesses like Peach from Super Mario Bros and Zelda from The Legend of Zelda, but subverts the normally docile demeanor of those characters by swearing and getting competitive about online gaming. After her appearance in the Direct, she inspired a large amount of fan art.
Origin
During the February 17th, 2021 Nintendo Direct, EA showed a trailer for their upcoming game Knockout City. While the game itself is an online multiplayer game with dodgeball-like mechanics featuring generic avatars, the trailer showcased several characters parodying other video game genres such as first-person shooters, MMOs, 2D platformers, and sports games being interviewed about Knockout City. This led viewers to initially believe that these characters would be featured in the game or that the game used elements of different popular game genres for its different classes. This led to disappointment when dodgeball-like gameplay with avatar characters was shown instead.
Spread
Following the Direct, several Twitter users expressed their love for Princess Charm's character design and personality with some even saying she was the highlight of the Direct. For example, user @DeadMii[1] tweeted she was "the highlight of the Direct," gaining over 500 retweets and 3,600 likes (shown below, left). User @InsertNameHRM[2] tweeted, "The only thing i ever cared about the Direct," gaining over 40 retweets and 200 likes (shown below, right).
In a now-deleted Tweet, Anaïs Maamar, the animator behind the Princess Charm segment of the Knockout City trailer, revealed that she didn't even know which game her animations would be used for (shown below).
Later posts from her account clarified that her posts were deleted because the animation studios that worked on the trailer were not credited by EA and that she was shocked by the amount of pornography Princess Charm already had within 24 hours of the trailer's release[3][4] (shown below).
In the days following the Direct, several people across the internet expressed that Princess Charm should have her own game. The video game news site Kotaku echoed this sentiment publishing an article called "A Princess Charm Game Would be Great, Thanks."[5]
So I kinda love the girl from that Knockout City ad and I want her to get a full game SO badly
