r/bigchungus was banned during a reddit ban wave against "hate" subreddits. Because of the subreddit's nature and the big Chungus meme, the banning of the subreddit became a meme across reddit.
Origin
On June 29, 2020, reddit went through with a banwave that banned many subreddits, including r/the_Donald, r/ChapoTraphouse, and more. R/bigchungus was one of the banned subreddits.
Spread
When word got around about the ban, several memes about the ban were created on mainly r/okbuddyretard and r/mediumchungus, with discussions about it being all over reddit.
