Red Pepper With Face, also known as Peppa Mane, refers to an image of a red pepper with a face used as an exploitable in memes, predominantly on Instagram. In mid-2023, Instagram user and hood irony meme page @igotzucc.v2 widely popularized the meme, nicknaming the pepper Peppa Mane. The image is visually similar to the apple with a face, also known as Wapple.

Origin

The Red Pepper With Face image was created by an artist named R. C. Carter and uploaded to his website^[1] under a section called "FOTO FIXIN'" that advertised his Photoshop abilities. The image was originally called "Pepper-Face" (shown below, left). The first discovered meme using the image was posted by Tumblr^[2] user ratfuck on January 22nd, 2018, who pretended that the pepper was "Dr. Pepper" like the soda. The post gained roughly 2,000 notes in five years (shown below, right).

About a year later, on May 19th, 2019, Tumblr^[3] user auckie used the pepper image in a post that read, "Man and wife," pairing the pepper with a similar, female-looking pepper, gaining roughly 6,000 notes in four years (shown below, left). A few years later, on November 8th, 2022, the pepper was used in a meme posted to /r/okbuddyretard ^[4] by Redditor mayo_-man, gaining over 140 upvotes in seven months (shown below, right).

On June 1st, 2023, Instagram^[5] user @igotzucc.v2 posted a Snoop Dogg says only one person has out smoked him meme with the red pepper, gaining roughly 6,700 likes in 11 days (shown below, left). In the weeks after, Instagram's @igotzucc.v2 continuously posted the image, like on June 4th,^[6] earning roughly 22,300 likes in eight days. On June 9th, 2023, Instagram^[7] user @igotzucc.v2 used the phrase "Peppa Mane" in a top caption, gaining roughly 7,800 likes in three days (shown below, right). Thereafter, the Instagram^[8] user continued to call the image "Peppa Mane."

@igotzucc.v2's memes were reposted by other Instagram^[9][10] users in June 2023, achieving virality on the new pages. Viral usage also surfaced on Twitter^[11] in June 2023.
