About

Scan QR Code for Menu at Restaurant refers to a series of memes about restaurants and bars that make you scan a QR code to access the menu, often portraying this as a negative thing and an annoyance. Memes about scanning QR codes at restaurants were first popularized in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and became increasingly popularized over the following years. In late June 2024, a series of memes on X / Twitter using the copypasta "imagine her being told she has to scan a qr code to order at a restaurant" went viral in which a photo of a character who might not react positively to a QR code menu is attached to the catchphrase.

Good idea: Put a QR code of your menu on signs/flyers advertising your restaurant. It can be more up-to-date and accurate than Google, and prevents confusion of similarly named restaurants in different towns that all-knowing Google definitely knows you meant and not the one three blocks from where you live. You can quickly check if there is food you/a friend might want instead of arriving and finding out the item you wanted isn't available, or everything has something someone in the group can't have.

Bad idea: Make this the only way to access the menu. Many people still don't use smartphones, or only use them to make calls. Even well-optimized online menus are more difficult to read than a paper-printed menu.
